Up, Up & Away
By Brandon PratherWhy This Weekend Is One of Angel Fire's Most Beloved Traditions
Balloons Over Angel Fire
Every summer, something magical happens in Angel Fire.
Before the sun rises above the mountains, colorful hot-air balloons begin to glow against the early morning sky. Families gather with coffee in hand, cameras ready, and children staring upward in awe as dozens of balloons gently lift off into the cool mountain air.
It’s called Balloons Over Angel Fire, and it’s one of the most unique events you’ll experience anywhere in the Southwest.
Taking place June 19–21, this Father’s Day Weekend tradition brings together stunning balloon launches, live music, community celebrations, local vendors, and unforgettable mountain memories. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for another year, there’s nothing quite like watching a field of hot-air balloons rise above the Moreno Valley.
Experience the Magic of Balloon Weekend
The Main Event: Mass Ascension at Sunrise
If there’s one experience you don’t want to miss, it’s the morning Mass Ascension.
Beginning at 6:30 AM each morning at Angel Fire Airport, dozens of hot-air balloons launch into the crisp mountain air, creating a colorful display against the backdrop of Northern New Mexico’s peaks. Gates open at 6:00 AM, and early arrival is highly recommended for the best viewing opportunities.
Unlike larger balloon festivals, Balloons Over Angel Fire offers a more intimate experience. Visitors can walk among the balloons, talk with pilots, learn how the aircraft work, and capture incredible photos as crews prepare for launch.
It’s one of the few high-mountain balloon events in the country—and one of Angel Fire’s most iconic summer traditions.
Pro Tip: Arrive Early for the Best Views
The balloons launch shortly after sunrise, and some of the best moments happen before takeoff as crews inflate the balloons and prepare for flight. Plan to arrive early, grab a warm drink, and watch the morning sky come to life.
More Than Balloons
While the balloons may steal the spotlight, the weekend offers plenty of reasons to stay and explore.
Mimosas in the Mountains
Following Saturday’s Mass Ascension, head into town for Mimosas in the Mountains, a festive street fair featuring live music, local vendors, food, arts and crafts, entertainment, and family-friendly activities. It’s the perfect way to continue the celebration after the balloons have drifted overhead.
Porsche Parade & Car Show
Car enthusiasts won’t want to miss Saturday’s Porsche Parade and Car Show. Admire beautifully maintained vehicles, meet fellow enthusiasts, and enjoy another unique event that helps make Balloons Over Angel Fire such a diverse community celebration.
Summer Music Series
Saturday evening brings live music to the Mountain View Event Center as part of Angel Fire’s popular Summer Music Series. Bring a chair or blanket, relax on the lawn, and enjoy mountain views paired with great music and a laid-back summer atmosphere.
Angel Fire Farmers Market
The weekend wraps up Sunday morning with the Angel Fire Farmers Market, where visitors can browse local products, meet regional artisans, and enjoy a slower pace before heading home.
Make It a Weekend Getaway
One of the best parts of Balloons Over Angel Fire is that the experience doesn’t end when the balloons land.
Spend your afternoons exploring scenic trails, fishing at Monte Verde Lake, shopping around the Village, or simply relaxing on a cabin deck while taking in the mountain views.
Because events begin early each morning, staying overnight allows you to fully enjoy the weekend without rushing.

The Fun Continues: Air Affair Week Begins June 24

Just days after Balloons Over Angel Fire concludes, the skies come alive once more during Angel Fire Air Affair, a multi-day celebration of aviation, creativity, and flight.
