What to Pack for a Winter Race Weekend

A little planning goes a long way—whether you’re lining up at the start gate or cheering from the sidelines.

For Racers

If you’re competing, pack with both speed and recovery in mind. You’ll need a grain shovel (or plan to use one provided by the Resort), along with a helmet and eye protection, which are required for all runs. Dress in warm, flexible layers that won’t restrict movement, and don’t forget waterproof gloves and boots—you’ll be spending plenty of time in the snow.

Sunscreen is a must (yes, even in winter at high altitude), and tossing a few bandages or blister pads into your pocket is never a bad idea. A small backpack with water, snacks, and an extra layer will keep you comfortable between runs so you can focus on the fun.

For Spectators & Cheer Squads

If you’re there to watch, lean into it. Bundle up in warm layers, bring insulated boots, and don’t forget sunglasses for bright mountain days. A thermos with something hot, hand warmers, and a camp chair can make spectating extra comfortable.

And if you really want to embrace the spirit of the Shovel Races—this is your moment. Cowbells, funny hats, a kazoo, or a homemade sign are all welcome. The more energy from the sidelines, the better.

Things to Do Between Races

Turn race weekend into a full Angel Fire getaway. There’s no shortage of winter fun to fill your downtime.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Take advantage of Angel Fire Resort’s lift-served terrain, whether you’re squeezing in a few runs between races or spending a full day on the slopes.

Snow Play & Tubing

Perfect for families and non-skiers, snow play areas and tubing hills offer easy winter fun without committing to a full ski day.

Discover the Greenbelt Trail System

Enjoy a quieter side of winter with scenic walks along the Greenbelt Trails. These paths are ideal for stretching your legs, spotting wildlife, and soaking in the mountain setting.

Dining, Drinks & Live Music

Refuel at local restaurants, grab a drink, or catch live music around the Village—especially in the evenings when the mountain energy winds down.
